It began over dinner in 1977, 2 former professional ice skaters trying to
decide what to do after life on the frozen floor. Ice skating does not qualify you for to many jobs.
What did they know? Travel. San Francisco had two types of accommodations back then; hotels and motels. Richard being from Europe asked about bed and breakfast accommodations which are offered all over Europe. This was a new idea.
Would Americans embrace such an idea? Would San Franciscans open their homes to out of towners? Would the out of towners stay in someones home? It took a few months , lots of press releases and a hotel strike to actually get the idea off the ground. Here we are 30 years later, a little grayer and yes, the bed and breakfast idea did work, and very successfully too.
